BIOS, short for Basic Input-Output System; this is a chip, or set of chips (nowadays it is a re-programmable Flash memory), in your computer that controls how your computer communicates with other hardware components in your system. It initializes several motherboard components and peripherals, like the clock generator, chipsets, CPU, caches, memory controller and I/O controller, RAM, PCI devices, graphics controller, mass storage controllers, keyboard, mouse, USB, etc. In newer computers, the BIOS is also what supports Plug-&-Play.
